VERO BEACH - Idle thoughts of participating in a Web-based reality show turned into a hot competition for one Vero Beach interior designer this summer.
Jill Shevlin, owner of Intrinsic Designs in Vero Beach, applied in early June for a spot in a North Carolina reality show and competition for interior designers with episodes shown only on the competition's Web site.
"It sounded like it would be fun and a real challenge to work out of town on a crazy small budget of $5,000," she said.
As it turned out, Shevlin was one of just seven selected from among 200 entrants to vie for a $25,000 prize in The Nation's Next Top Model Home competition based in Wilmington, N.C. Contestants must design the interior living space of a model home in the Compass Pointe development on the outskirts of Wilmington.
"I was just so happy when they called me," she said. "It's turning out to be really great."
The show is similar to television reality show contests, but viewing and voting are only available online at www.nationsnexttopmodelhome.com where a new episode video is posted each Monday at 8 p.m.
The contestants met for the first time last Thursday for a home tour, photo shoot, and to answer tricky questions on-camera about their competitors. That episode, "Say Cheese," is now on the Web site.
"It was pretty exciting," Shevlin said. "I've never had a stylist or done a photo shoot before."
Then she came face-to-face with the elements of the show that were like the television reality shows such as Big Brother or Survivor.
"The first thing they did was ask me who I thought was going to be my greatest competition," Shevlin said. "I hadn't even looked up the background of the other designers yet. But they want you to dish on the others, and I started to take the reality show aspect of it very seriously after that. When I came home I googled the other designers right away."
The designers do all their planning from their own studios, returning to Compass Pointe only when it is time to install the furnishings and window treatments.
The competition begins Aug. 1 and ends Aug. 28, with competition episodes going up on the Web site each Monday from Aug. 3 to31. Wrap-up episodes will be posted each Monday in September.
Public voting on the Web site is from 9 a.m. Aug. 29 through 5 p.m. Sept. 26, with the winner of the competition and $25,000 revealed on Oct. 3.
