"THE GRAND HARBOR BOOK CLUB" presented "BAR HOPPING THRU AMERICA"
I was lucky to be invited to a discussion led by Terry Lyons of his just published
non-fiction book covering the role of the tavern, saloon, bar and nightclub in
the development of this country! The setting was the spectacular Grand Harbor
Clubhouse and it was a full house.....I was also lucky to get Terry to autograph
my book.
Terry researched back to the Colonial times and the taverns that were so much a
part of life in the villages. Then the taverns of the northen cities were the places
that the immigrants went to. They met the people and were able to speak the
languages of their homeland.
I grew up in Chicago, and I remember that there was a bar on the corner every two
blocks or so throughout the inner-city. This is where the neighbors got together to
socialize and meet new people in the community. Times have changed and even in
cities like Chicago, those bars are mostly gone!
He names the bars of the major cities and recommends some for you to try in
your travels. He also has some great quotes on drinking....here is one of them...
"I may be drunk, but in the morning I will be sober, and you, Madame, will still
be ugly." - Winston Churchill's response to Lady Astor's accusation.
