VERO BEACH - Piper Aircraft Inc. executives are attending a large defense trade show in Southeast Asia this week.
For the first time in the company's history, company officials are at The Brunei International Defence Exhibition (BRIDEX), an annual trade show in the homeland of Piper's new parent company.
On May 1, Imprimis, whose Imprimis Strategic Investment Corp. is a joint venture with the Ministry of Finance of Brunei Darussalam, purchased Piper from American Capital Ltd.
The show runs Aug. 12-15 at the Royal Brunei Polo & Riding Club.
Piper spokesman Mark Miller declined to comment on the trip Wednesday morning. According to the news release from Piper, the purpose of the trip is to "emphasize the importance Piper places on its global expansion plans."
The release again made reference to the company's goal of expanding its international dealer network in Asia, the Pacific and Oceania, the Middle East, Europe, Africa, Central America and the Caribbean.
Piper's President John Becker, Director of Sales Operations Bruce Cady and Director of Marketing Jacqueline Carlon are all attending the trade show.
"Important to our long-term plan is recruitment and establishment of world-class dealers and service in areas where Piper plans to expand," Becker said in the release. "BRIDEX has the draw and the geography to reach those dealers."
Piper's display at the trade show consists of scale models of the company's flagship turboprop, The Piper Meridian; the developmental PiperJet and the Piper Seminole.
Piper is one of the largest employers in Indian River County. Last September, company executives said Piper employed close to 1,200 workers. Since then, an estimated 500 employees have been laid off at the plant.
Citing the "deepening global recession," Piper laid off 300 workers in February without severance and had another round of about 50 layoffs in July. Piper already had 150 separate layoffs in November and December in addition to reduced, four-day work schedules. According to published industry reports, Piper also has instituted weekly furloughs every month until the end of the year.
County officials have said Piper has not communicated with the county about plans to meet future performance measures to receive the remaining installments of its $32 million incentive package, which is tied to employment levels and production of the new PiperJet.
