Country singer Jake Owen traces his past in Vero Beach

VERO BEACH - Jake Owen went back to the beginning on Monday when he stopped by the Melody Music Shop on Vero Beach's Miracle Mile.

Owen, a country music performer who got his start in Vero Beach, was in town filming a Great American Country television special called "Origins" that will air on cable in September.

The show, which is produced by Deaton Flanigen Productions in Nashville, takes viewers to the places that were significant in the development of some of country music's biggest stars.

In addition to Melody Music, the 27 year-old musician filmed segments at Golf Roundup on Miracle Mile and the Riverside Café where he often performed. Owen was named the Academy of Country Music's Top New Male vocalist in 2009.

"It's pretty surreal to come back to where it all originated for me," said Owen. "To think that this is where I got my first guitar and now I can buy my own sheet music here. It's unbelievable."

Melody Music's owner Anthony Borzello said that he has known Owen since his days at Gifford Middle School and Owen is still the same type of person.

"He's very down to earth," said Borzello. "Nothing really has changed about him since he became a star. Basically, what you see is what you get and that's what I like about him."

Owen roamed the store, trying out different guitars, commenting to the film crew that they were all in tune, just like when he was a student at Vero Beach High School.

"It's amazing to look around and see how much you've grown," said Owen, surveying the merchandise in Borzello's shop. "Not so much the size of the store, but all of the things you have brought in here are just amazing."

Owen grew up in Vero Beach with his twin brother Jarrod, and got his start in country music after his dreams of a professional golf career were shattered by an injury. During his recuperation, Owen began writing songs on the guitar, inspired by the country music he loved. After moving to Nashville, he signed with RCA records in 2005, and has released two albums; "Startin' With Me" and "Easy Does It."

Along with tennis star and good friend Mardy Fish, Owen continues to supports numerous Vero Beach programs for children through the Mardy Fish Foundation. Each December, he and Fish sponsor the Mardy's Tennis and Jake's Music Fest that raises funds for local charities.

"The greatest thing about this community is that everyone is so helpful," Owen said. "They are the reason I am the person I am today. I come back here because I owe to them and I want to say thanks."

While filming a segment outside of Melody Music, Owen was interrupted by a fan, looking for him to sign the hood of her car. Owen obliged and posed for a picture with Susan Ellis and Maurice Leuycka of Fort Pierce, who had spotted Owen after having lunch in a nearby restaurant. "If I rewound the tape of my life, I wouldn't believe that I'd be here today, signing the hood of somebody's car," Owen said.

Owen's solicitous nature also impressed fellow musician Sean Wolf, who was at Melody Music Monday afternoon to pick up some equipment for his southern rock band known as Squerl. "It says a lot about a person when they take the time to come back and see everyone in their hometown," Wolf said.
