VERO BEACH - If at first you succeed, do it again. That's the motto of merchants south of State Road 60 in downtown Vero Beach, who will stage their second open house in four months on Friday.
"April's open house was so successful that most businesses could not wait to welcome the community back," said event chairwoman Lila Blakeslee. "We're calling this one a ‘stroll' because we want people to take a leisurely walk through the area."
The area is bordered by State Road 60, 18th Street, Old Dixie Highway and 15th Avenue. Merchants have dubbed it "The Downtown Dine & Design District."
Four newcomers to the district will be among the 24 participating merchants. They include restaurants, studios, galleries, specialty stores and service companies. Visitors will be offered free beverages, snacks, product samples and live entertainment. WGRV 107.9 FM, will provide the musical backdrop with its trademark smooth jazz.
"Merchants have donated more than $1,000 in prizes for a raffle to benefit Main Street Vero Beach and the Cultural Council of Indian River County," Blakeslee said. "We'll also be presenting a $50 cash prize to the winner of a scavenger hunt that requires visits to a certain number of businesses."
Committee member Mindy Parker said the event will enable people to see what's inside the stores, especially those that are not usually open after 5 p.m. "They can meander, experience the location and make noncommittal visits to the businesses," she said.
Blakeslee said, "Many of those who attended April's open house told us it was their first visit to the area. Some came back later to make purchases, and we're looking for a similar result this time."
Organizers hope that the open houses will help the area to establish an identity. "The association of art and restaurants is the key to making the area come alive," Blakeslee said. "Every city with a cool art district and restaurants has been successful."
